THE AVENGERS (PG 13) – Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, The Black Widow, and The Hulk come together to fight Thor’s relative Loki in an epic two and a half hour battle for earth. There is humor and massive special effects giving each character their own story line while weaving it all into a heck of a good time at the theatre. Four tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
DARK SHADOWS (PG 13) – Barnabas Collins has risen once again in the form of a very pale Johnny Depp. In Tim Burton’s newest vision of a 1970’s vampire soap opera come to screen. The film has its funny moments but not enough of them. Depp takes the vampire form to more comical heights but sometimes a re-do is a re-don’t. Three tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
THINK LIKE A MAN (PG 13) – Four women are having difficulty in their relationships and discover the book “Think Like A Man” written by Steve Harvey. They use that advice on their men to get them to do what they want. When the men catch on total comedy ensues. Three tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
THE HUNGER GAMES (PG-13) – In the future, the Capitol chooses a girl and a boy from each of the 12 districts to fight in THE HUNGER GAMES. Katniss Everdeen steps up when her 12-year-old sister is called. Twenty-four young people must fight each other with only one standing in the end. Based on the trilogy by author Suzanne Collins, it is no surprise that this film has raked in $155 million dollars in its first three days. The film has action, drama, and suspense in waiting for the next film installment. The best part is that although reading is always good, audiences won’t lose anything by seeing the film. Four tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
THE LUCKY ONE (PG-13) – Zac Efron plays a Marine who finds a picture of a girl believing it saved his life. Returning home he finds her and a romance ensues. The entire story is pretty predictable from start to finish but Efron and author Nicholas Sparks worked it all into a romance that seems to be working. Three tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS (PG) – From the creators of “Wallace and Grommit” comes director Peter Lord’s vision of the Pirate Captain and his band of misfits who are out to win the prize of all prizes – to become Pirates of the Year. The film is amazing in its preparation and fun to watch too! Three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT (R) – An interesting look at a relationship of Jason Segel who also wrote the screenplay and Emily Blunt as a couple who take forever to commit to getting married. Take the R rating seriously folks! Knowing this comes from the same folks who gave us “Bridesmaids” it is fun but predictable. Three tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG 13) – This film is just full of surprises. No special effect, no light and magic, no loud crashes and smack downs. Just a story about people feeling that because they are of a certain age they should be put out to pasture. Instead, they dare to journey one more time to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in India. There they find themselves in ways they never expected. From Dame Judy Dench to Tom Wilkinson, Billy Nighy and Maggie Smith, the film is amazing performed in a settling equally as lovely. Four tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
CHIMPANZEE (PG) – Disney follows the life of a chimpanzee, Oscar, who becomes lost from his family and is adopted by a full-grown male chimpanzee. Although Oscar is very cute, the film misses the opportunity to talk openly about the plight of these creatures and instead attempts to take a safer route. Two and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
GIRL IN PROGRESS (PG 13) – Eva Mendes plays the single Mom Grace having an affair with Matthew Modine, yea, we are already into unbelievable territory already. She’s struggling to raise daughter who wants to skip straight to being an adult after reading books for school. What comes of it falls short of a reason to care about any of the characters. I hate when that happens! Two and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. (Reading Cinema Grossmont, Regal Parkway Plaza, Edwards Rancho San Diego).
